I'm sure we've all experienced a lull before - in life, on a night out, at work - but the wedding day lull is something that many couples are completely unaware of. The lull can take your day from pure vibes, to an early bedtime. We're going to dive into what the wedding day lull is, and what you can do to combat it!
So what is it? What is the lull?!
Most weddings run like this - get married, have drinks and photos, time for your meal, then...what? Usually there's a gap between your meal and the beginning of your evening reception as your venue prepares the room, and your entertainment get set up. Depending on what time you get married, this gap can be anywhere between thirty minutes to two hours long. A wedding day can be a long one, throw in a full belly from a top class meal, and it can leave you and your guests feeling tired and sluggish. With nothing to entertain you before your evening reception, it becomes the lull, making it harder to get everybody in the mood for a party when your DJ or band begins their set.
So how do I combat the lull?
Choice of ceremony time has an impact on this. Choosing to get married at 1pm or 2pm means you'll have less of a gap between your meal and evening reception, equalling less downtime for you and your guests. However, don't despair if you have booked an earlier ceremony, there are things you can do to keep guests engaged throughout the lull.
Live entertainment, whether that's a musician or magician, is the perfect way to keep guests engaged, and create a seamless transition from day time to night time. It doesn't need to be anything over the top, even a 45 minute set from a saxophonist playing some of your favourite tunes is enough to keep the party going.
Did you know that we offer a set during this part of the day too? It can either be booked as a stand alone set, or added onto our packages!
As well as live entertainment, games are always a huge hit! Whether that's lawn games, mini golf, or arcade machines, bring out your competitive side until it's time to hit that dance floor. Great for photos, and also great for getting your two families to bond on your wedding day! This is something that many couples only consider for their drinks reception, but can be equally as fun during this break in the day.
Have a dessert buffet. Depending on how many courses you'll be having during dinner, desserts are often often left uneaten, which let's be honest, is a tragedy. Avoid this, and keep guests engaged before your evening reception by having a dessert bar full of sweet treats, meaning guests can have dessert at their own pace, even going for seconds if they have the space.
Most of your guests will bring cards of congratulations, however some couples also choose to have a guestbook of sorts. Unfortunately, sometimes guests aren't even aware there's a book to sign, and will completely miss it, so this is the perfect time to get it passed around! It might also be cute to include a polaroid of each guest along with their best wishes, this gap in the day is the perfect opportunity for one of your most trusted friends to help get everybody's photo taken, and ensure they pop their message in the book.
The lull doesn't have to kill the vibes on your wedding day, if you know how to combat it. Keeping your guests engaged until it's time to hit the dancefloor is key to avoiding a lull in your wedding day, and ensuring everybody has a good night! Will you be using any of these tips to combat the wedding day lull?
